We are looking to purchase a RV5 and the hope was to get a large enough mattress to put on the base of the
tent and have the whole
family crash in together. We are open to 2 mattresses. We need something comfy and easy to set up and pack down as
well as storing small. We have previously had (before kids) an inflatable 5 chamber MEGA mattress that was cold in winter and set me to the roof everytime hubby moved, and then had a foam mattress in our camper we had to sell last year :(
Any tips? Foam would more than suit but which thickness, and how do we store/transport it between camps?

hi k15s,
I recently purchased an rv4 and have also been looking for mattress soluations.
most people seem to recommend (for a couple) to get two king single self inflating mattresses as the singles are easier to re-roll than a queen.
I would suggest (if you can afford it) getting 3 or 4 king single self inflating oztrail mattresses. they are 10cm thick and two together are the equivalent to a queen sized mattress.
you then roll them up and store them on your roof rack when driving and leave them unrolled under a bed when you're at
home.
hope this helps.
Jason.

Thx Will look further into them. Think 2 x the Oztent DB mattress @ 127cm wide may do it. I'm hoping to fit Hubby and me and 4 kids under 7 in there! Hopefully with a few top-to-toe we might fit.
Any other suggestions for lots of people in one sleeping space would be great!
(Other than "don't do it! LOL!")

Because the width between the aluminium frames inside the
tent is less than 2400mm in my RV4 in can squish 3 x 1900 x 800 x 100mm self inflating mattresses in and sleep 4 or 5 people quite easily . RV5 should be the same just not as tight .

Hi k15s
We have 2 RV4 Oz Tents which we join together with an additional piece by Oz
Tent and with four walls/doors we have an enclosed room for bad weather and 2 bedrooms. We have 2 kids they sleep in 1
tent and my wife and I sleep in the other
tent. We use the Oz
Tent Self inflating mattress with retractable frame. We purchased a 240V pump that inflates and deflates a queen size mattress in about 3 mins. Kids have the same beds but singles, very comfy mattress and keeps them off the ground.

I'm confused...??? I have an OzTent RV3 and just looked at the website following your post about retractable frame self inflating mattresses. No mention of such a thing in OzTent.., do you mean Oz Trail??
And, if it is self inflating, why do you need a 240V pump??

Hi Don
Yes you are right Oz Trail and it is not self inflating, I use a powerful 240V reversible pump that takes 3mins to fully inflate or fully deflate and a very comfortable bed it is.

Been there as
well,
family of 5
Watch out!
In your calculations/decisions, consider the bulk of the mattress storage that you require. Rollong up the full size mattresses will take up a lot of volume that will half-fill your roofrack.
For that reason we opted to get smaller size mattresses for the kids, rolls up easier and less space

I second getting 4 x single or king singles, instead of the double/queen self-inflaters. The larger ones are harder to roll up and are bulkier when storing. Hubby and I have a King Single Oztrail Self-Inflating Mattress each that we push together to form a queen ... then have two single sleeping bags that zip together. Our girls have a single each. All four are much easier to store up in the roof cage and at
home.
